This is an excellent book with the majority of information you would need to modify your A series engine for performance or economy. I did find, however, that it is more orientated at the performance market (I'm not complaining).

The book is set out in chapters with each one talking about a different aspect/part of the engine (i.e. carburettor, exhaust and cams) in detail starting with the theory then how to tune the engine. It contains lots of experimental data found by the author himself comparing different types/makes of components. The author also gives his recommendations which, judging from how excellent the book is and his experience, are well worth taking into account.

All aspects of the engine are considered and the theory is excellent allowing the reader to apply the information to parts not made when the book was published.

I do have one criticism however, the book sometimes uses details and acronyms which have not been explained previously and is sometimes difficult to follow. Taking into account how detailed and generally excellent the book is, a bit of head scratching on some concepts is a small price to pay.

Not only a thorough book, but also a thoroughly good read...

The Definitive Manual on Tuning is exactly what it is. Even if your like me and have a basic knowledge of engines you will find that suddenly you start to sound like a guru. I have used so much of this info already investing in second-hand parts and the like. The best thing about this book is that David Vizard doesn't just presume we all have an endless supply of cash, instead he promotes hard work aswell as advising on the purchase of new parts.

Verdict: I think this book is the best use of paper ever!

A well written and readable reference. Full of useful insights into a long period of research into tweaking the A-series for maximum efficiency, or maximum power. All theories are backed up with before and after dyno plots, which makes it all more believable.

Since 1989 this book (back in 1989 1. edition - now 3. edition) has been more or less my bible. Lots of illustrations and photos with well written text explaning what to do and NOT to do, to make the A Series engine develop more power and/or better economy/mileage. All the practical tips is supported/documented by serious testing - and the background theory!.

Especially interesting is:

the camshafts chapter (contains both test results proving the Scatter Pattern concepts potential and the reason why it works/theory behind)

the cylinder head chapter (including the latest 7 head from AKM Racing in Denmark)

the Blocks, Cranks, Rods & Piston chapter (which type of block to use for boring to 73.5 mm, which pistons, where to find good rods and how to lightening them safely)

and I could carry on - In short:

A MUST FOR ANYONE WITH INTEREST IN TUNING THE BL'S A-SERIES ENGINE - GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY, AVOID DOING THE SAME MISTAKES OTHERS HAS DONE!

A real gem of a book. No fancy jargon. Most importantly written by someone with a hands on experience. Lots of good tips and practical advice.
